Coriolanus is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, focusing on the life and downfall of the Roman general Caius Marcius Coriolanus. The play starts with a revolt by the common people, or plebeians, against the patricians due to a food shortage in Rome. Coriolanus, known for his military prowess and disdain for the common people, achieves fame by defeating the Volscians at Corioli, earning the name Coriolanus.
His mother, Volumnia, encourages him to run for consul, a position requiring the vote of the people. Initially successful, Coriolanus’s contempt for popular rule leads to his downfall. He is banished from Rome after a public argument with the tribunes and the plebeians. In exile, he joins forces with his enemy, Tullus Aufidius, and the Volscians to attack Rome.
The play’s climax occurs when his mother, wife, and son plead with him not to attack Rome. Moved by their pleas, Coriolanus agrees to make peace. However, this act is seen as a betrayal by Aufidius and his conspirators, who kill Coriolanus. The play explores themes of pride, revenge, and the complex dynamics between personal honor, family, and state.
